Prior to Windham Woods, I was in my first year as a public school teacher and was placed in an Arts and Humanities classroom. While the content allowed some creativity in programming, I felt I was not fully meeting both my needs/wants as a professional and wasn't providing to the students what I hoped when I studied Education.

I believe that education, especially for diverse minds, must be student-driven. It must be meaningful and applicable in real-time. Students must be centered in the creation of learning. When I came to WWS, I was given a unique opportunity to combine my personal love in adventure and the outdoors, with serving a meaningful purpose in creating meaningful opportunities for challenge, growth, reflection, and integration.

Windham has provided me with meaningful connections. They have provided me opportunities for personal and professional growth.

Every day I ask my students to do hard things - from navigating social situations, working over time to read the instructions, or having to work on a project with someone new. It is important to me that I ask the same of myself and I model this for my students. As a basketball coach, I always told my players I would never ask them to do something that I wouldn't do with them. This meant I ran the sprints with them, I lifted with them, I stayed late with them.

I believe in the importance of hard-work and follow-through, the power of stories, and essentialness of community. The Boston Marathon as a race, also embodies this mindset.
